The New South Wales (NSW) department of education in Australia has deactivated some internal systems after becoming the victim of a cyber-attack.

The timing has created considerable challenges for staff as they prepare for the start of a new term, said education secretary Georgina Harrisson

Given the priority is safety and security of student and staff data, the department took some systems offline as a precaution while it investigates, she added.

“Thankfully, our teams have been able to isolate the issues and we are working to reactivate services as soon as possible,” Harrisson said, adding there will be no impact on students learning at home from week beginning 12 July.

The department is working with Cyber Security NSW to resolve the problem and has referred the matter to the state’s police and national government agencies.
