The login IDs and passwords of volunteers and ticket purchasers for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympics have leaked online, it has emerged just as the games are getting underway.

The data, likely stolen by unauthorised access to computers or smartphones, has been posted on a website which exposes personal information, a government official was reported as saying by the Kyodo news agency.

The Olympics’ organising body has launched an investigation into the leak which the official described as not large and measures have already been taken to prevent a further spread of the information.

As Kyodo pointed out, having a person’s login ID and password may lead to access to more personal data such as name, address and bank account.
