Max Schrems, aka “The man who took on Facebook, and won” will be giving an exclusive keynote at PrivSec Global on Thursday 24 June at 2pm (BST).

Few are better positioned to comment than Max Schrems. The lawyer and founder of privacy NGO, noyb.eu has been a major player in the international privacy debate for well over a decade.

In April, Schrems filed a complaint against Google in France, claiming the tech giant is tracking individuals with Android phones without permissions being in place. “Through these hidden identifiers on your phone, Google and third parties can track users without their consent,” an noyb spokesperson said.

Next Thursday 24 June at 2pm (BST) Max Schrems’ keynote will deep-dive into user consent, data protection standards within the EU, and data flows between the EU and the US.

Also talking at next week’s PrivSec Global, Author, Senior Fellow at Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL), and Open Markets Institute, Johnny Ryan will be discussing Landmark Litigation and how online advertising is causing the biggest data breach. ICCL’s lawsuit takes aim at Google, Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Verizon, AT&T, and the entire online advertising and tracking industry, by challenging industry rules.

Included in hundreds of pages of evidence is the industry rulebook for building secret dossiers about every person. These dossiers can include your mental health conditions, financial situation, and even whether your child has special needs.

Dr Johnny Ryan, Senior Fellow of ICCL, said “These secret dossiers about you – based on what you think is private – could prompt an algorithm to remove you from the shortlist for your dream job. A retailer might use the data to single you out for a higher price online. A political group might micro-target you with personalised disinformation.”

Other keynotes include

  • Tue 22 June, 10am (BST): Ciaran Martin, Founding CEO of the National Cyber Security Centre and now Professor, University of Oxford

  • Wed 23 June, 12pm (BST): Michelle King, Managing Director of Equality Forward, Former Director of Inclusion, Netflix and Leading Global Expert in Gender Equality
