Geopolitical Risk Adviser, Sibyline and former HSBC risk pioneer who wrote the book on linking geopolitical risk to ESG for the Board.

Derek is Senior Geopolitical Risk Adviser at Sibylline, supporting the firm’s consulting and geopolitical risk work.

He is heavily focused on promoting and supporting new approaches to geopolitical risk management by firms, their boards, management teams and other key internal functions.

Prior background in geopolitical risk consultancy, preceded by roles in HSBC including setting up the Group’s geopolitical risk function in the bank’s global HQ, and the first of its kind among peer systemically important banks, and leading public policy campaigns for the bank’s government affairs team.

Prior roles for the UK government. Derek was appointed as Visiting Scholar to the London Institute of Banking and Finance’s Centre for Governance, Risk and Regulation in 2023 and provides geopolitical risk training to the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors.

He is the co-author of ‘The Extra G – ESG2 ’, innovative leading practice guidance on geopolitical risk oversight and its integration with ESG issues for boards, their risk committees and risk functions, in association with The Risk Coalition.
